Cwi Duński – A Resistance Hero from Sosnowiec
Cwi Duński was only 21 years old when he died after being tortured in a Gestapo prison. For a long time before that, he managed to outmaneuver both Germans and Jewish police, who were trying to capture him for his fearless underground activities. In his hometown of Sosnowiec, together with just few companions from the local branch of Hashomer Hatzair organization, he printed underground press, put up resistance leaflets around the city, and even tried to kill Moses Merin himself.
The story of Cwi Duński is a tale of the tragic fate of young Jewish people from Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, members of the pioneering movement who trained for settlement in the Land of Israel before the war. Most of them never saw Israel; they were either murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau, or died in forced labor camps.
The lecture & presentation in English will be delivered by Tomek Grząślewicz, a translator and regionalist from Sosnowiec, editor-in-chief of A Guidebook to Jewish Heritage in Sosnowiec. It will be attended by special guests – a group of educators from Arizona.
