SICK BEAUTY
Through this cycle, I address the topic of cultural heritage and the concept of beauty. I invoke works that constitute the canon of art history. These are references to the ancient ideal, Aphrodite – the goddess of love identified with female beauty, and Apollo – the god of arts, who embodied the antique ideal of male beauty. The realistic form of the antique heads of Aphrodite and Apollo has been damaged, in my conception to introduce a new value in the understanding and defining the meaning of a work of art. Their images show what we normally don’t want to see, since what is “under the skin” may hurt the eye, going against the traditional understanding of art. In this approach, the beaux arts becomes somewhat out of date as a term. In the 20th century, creative activities appeared within the realm of visual arts, in which beauty is no longer a term capable of describing the value of the works.
